  • kittens

Zeria's cat had kittens yesterday afternoon.  Its her first litter, and she is being STUPID.

I've never had a cat have problem with kittens.  But ugh I have a bad feeling I'm going to do a fast learning curve as to hand-nursing babies. UGH UGH UGH.

    She just had three.

She had the first one on the living room couch.  And then left it to fall in the crack of the couch, so that Jeremiah found it and shrieked.  Its amazingly still just fine.

She had the second one on Zeria's bed...leaving the first one on the couch, so we carried it to her.  And eventually the third was also had on Zeria's bed.  We left them there.  They got dried off and cleaned.  We assumed she did that.  But she just doesn't seem intrested in cuddling with them.

Zeria of course didn't want them on her bed while she slept.  (eww)  So we tried moving them to a box.  Mommy cat just let us.  She purrs, lets us love her, but doesn't seem much intrested in the babies.

We moved her and the kittens into our bedroom and closed the door so she would be forced to be in the same space.  She slept on the foot of our bed most of the night.  Of course I was sleeping, so I have no clue if she nursed them then or not.  *growl*  But I do know in the last 2 hours she hasn't gotten near them...although she did peer into the box from a distance twice.

Sooooo we went and got our puppy kennel out, put the box inside it, and the mommy cat and locked them in.  Put a blanket over the kennel so they couldn't be disturbed.

Oh yeah, and first thing this morning the kids went to peer at the kittys (not touching) and shrieked "One's missing."  Sure enough it was laying in the middle of the kitchen in a puddle of water.

And no she wasn't moving them, as she was sitting in the sunshine in the living room.  *growl*

So I dried the kitty and warmed it up, and placed it back with its siblings.  There's only three of them, so I don't think its about not having enough milk.  I think its about being young and stupid.

So if this plan doesn't work in the next four hours or so...I guess I'm hand raising 3 kittens.

    YUCK YUCK YUCK!

  • Good Luck.  As a kid we had a white cat that refused to nurse her babies.  We didn't know that she wasn't so put them with another mommy kitty, but the kittens were to far gone.  The other mommy kitty accepted them along with hers, but guess it wasn't in the cards for them to live.  Some cats just don't make good mothers.   Hope you are able to keep up the feedings,  if the mother kid doesn't (kinda reminds me of the human population and what goes on)  Sighs.   We don't have a cat now since Bobbi-Tail was euthanized May 1 and probably won't for a long time.  But I do miss him, he was a real character.
