  • Much better.

I'm feeling much better this evening.  And our baton practice went quite well.  We had another girl show that hadn't called which was excellent.  All told at this point I *think* we have 16.  But am not totally sure as several couldn't show today.

    Any how in other news.

This is our "baby" of the family.  I've been blogging about her for awhile now.  She's actually already a bit bigger then this picture and doomed to get much bigger.  I quite frankly HATED her last week.  But after an hour of very hands on training she's okay in my book again!

She is meant to be an OUTDOOR dog.  And every time the door was open she snuck in, and immediately dumped every garbage in the house.  Major major puppy mess.

So I purposefully left the door open on a nice day.  And first I stood in front of the door and every time she walked in I popped her nose and kicked her back out.  After 10 or 15 tries of this.  She decided that game was rather old.

So I got smarter, and stood around the corner from the door.  She tried that two or three times.  And then just gave up and went to sleep.

She's snuck in ONCE since then and that was today.

And yup she immediatelly tipped my garbage.  Little stink.  But that was a major improvement and immediately got booted.

Tomorrow or Thursday maybe I'll give her another open door test, but I think mostly she's got it, and it makes her a much much nicer puppy.

Great Danes are NOT meant to be house dogs.

Everything is slowly turning Fall colors.  I actually took this picture two weeks ago, but its still pretty, and I haven't shared one of the outside of my house in a LONG time.  So had to show what our house/property is doing.

Since last blogging about my rag rugs I've made umm four of them?  One for my living room which is beautiful shades of purple.  One pink/black one that I gave to the girls.  One I've got at a local store under commision, and one that's in process.  I would have sold the one in the girls room, but I wasn't happy with the tension in it.  It didn't want to lay super flat, I've learned much since then!

The last two I've had ZERO issue with tension, because I've finally learned when to add stitches. etc.  I really need to take a picture of my purple one.  It wasn't made with recycled fabric.  It was made with new...and it wasn't *cough, cough* cheap.  It will be the ONLy one I make that way.  It was just too much money.  But its so purdy!

Anyhow the reason I discussed rugs is Goodwill has had all of their linens on 50% off sale.  I've hit there twice buying DIRT cheap sheets/curtains/etc that will work for rag rugs.  Jeremiah will atest to the fact that I might have gone overboard!

Actually he thought it was funny and begged me to take his picture.  He likes getting "squished" when mom shops.  He's weird that way.

I have amassed enough for two very niced rugs in two sets of colors and spent not too much in the process.   I'm also collecting from the rummage store which has gotten me quite a bit.  But I forbade myself to collect until I build a bit.  hehehehe

  • I'll take one in Maroon with a smidge of gold or yellow... he he.  I really need to send you this fabric you gave me forever ago.  I can't stand the pattern but you aren't going to see it in a rug and there is like twelve yards of the stuff.  Has your stomach settled enough to enjoy all the fruit?  We had eight boxes in our truck and apparently they are heavy because we were squating a bit.  We bought an extra box of apples and peaches and divided them between mom and the mcgees.

  • Looks like dog has some lab in him too.

Your rug interprise seems to be taking off.

Glad you are better and hope the kids are too and Rob escaped most of it.

  • Sorry, you guys have been sick. And you were so worried about baton and it sounds like you are doing really great if you continue to get new kids coming!

Now, not to lecture or ruin your day, but Great Danes are not meant to be outside dogs whatsoever. They do not tolerate heat well and cold really hits them hard. They are also very family social dogs that need that interaction with their owners. Granted they will take up your couch or any comfortable furniture that they like (we gave up the large ottoman a long time ago to ours) indoors, but they are not the most active of dogs and do not need to be over exercised. Also as an outside dog they cannot be monitored for the amount of food they eat and they do not need to exercise or run around for 30 to 45 minutes before or after they eat as it can cause bloat and stomach torsion (we lost a great dane to this as we were not well educated on the breed when we got our first great dane, this is something that affects deep chested dogs). Their food also needs to be elevated to help prevent bloat and food does not need to be left out for them to eat at anytime they want as if you let them they will eat all day which does not help with the bloat situation. We had left food out for our first dane all the time and he would stuff himself and we made the mistake of letting him out in the yard to run around when I went to check on him 30 minutes later to let him in, he was dead. The exercise on a full stomach caused his stomach to flip and killed him. I would just hate for you to lose your dane to this. Also because of their size they are very prone to hip and joint problems. If trained and disciplined as a puppy they can be taught not to mess with the trash and to not "counter surf" (yes because of their height they love to scour for any food they can reach from the counter). They love peanut butter sandwiches and a supplement of omega 3 fish oil is great for their coat. Unfortunately they have a very short life span, anywhere for 7 to 9 years average. Sorry for the lecture, just after losing our first dane, I am very passionate about the breed. They are truly great dogs that have a great tempermant and our current boy is just a big baby.

  • That photo of Jer is so cute!
