I began my first crocheted rag rug Saturday.  I researched it online, and it looked easy enough.  I quickly learned I love doing it.  I used some material that I brought with me from the move I had 12 yards of it that I tore on the bia into 3 inch strips.  Next time I would do 2 inch strips, but you live and learn.  Its turning out awesome, but it EATS the rags.  Big time.

So today the rummage store was open, and as usual I peaked in there.  I found a couple things for the kids and perused their sheets/fabric to see if their was anything that would work.

    Nothing jumped out at me.

I stood and talked with my friends who run the store, as they sorted through stuff.  One of them pulled out a fabric shower curtain that was the right color.  (blue shades).  I liked the look of it, and asked to feel it.  I said I’d take it for rags.  (a whole 25 cents)

Marie’s eyes lit up when she heard what I was doing.  “What about bed ruffles?”

    “Well their so gathered.”

She headed to the back and found a blue one and handed it to me, its not really, and you’d get a lot of rag out of it.

She was right.  “Come look she said.”

The back room isn’t usually available to customers.

Judy comments as we all head back.  “I was just about to get rid of all of them as they don’t sale.

There were 7 or 8 of them that were the right shade.  “How much?”

    “Take them.”

So my hobby can be continued without costing a penny.

*beams*  Okay 25 cents if you count the first bit.  ROFL

They are easy to take a part and give me a nice diversity in color.  And save stuff going to the land fill.  If I wanted to add white material to it I’d have even more material.   I’m kinda hesitant about that…I wonder how difficult it would be to dye the white.

    HMMMM

  • what an exciting new hobby…i keep saying that i’m gonna learn to crochet someday…when i have nothing else to do…as usual there are more things to do than day in my life…

check the label for the content of the bedskirts…if the white fabric is cotton it will dye easily…if it is polyester it will not take the dye very well if at all…perhaps try a piece of it and see if you want to use it colored or just add it still white to add a contrast to a color you are doing on a rug…

i have a hand crocheted rug in the bathroom that my minerva(mom) made me years ago…i’ve used it and stored it and the kitties and now the doggie love to roll in it and thrash around…it is still holding up very well…i believe that she cuts her fabric 1″ wide…she also cuts up bread sacks and other plastic bags and uses them to make rugs with too…they also hold up very well…

have fun crocheting…perhaps when you are done you can post a picture…i love to see your pictures of the kids and the scenery where you live…it is all very beautiful…

    god bless…>^,,^<linda

  • A good constructive hobby.  Anything all cotton will dye.  Why do you need to dye it anyway?  Just blend it in.  Not big long pieces but in smaller sizes to just give a touch of contrast here and there.  Mud pies for dinner…Yum!

  • @TheSunnyC - white with 6 kids is forbotten in this house.  I’m doing good to make my mud-colored floors look semi-clean.  On top of that we have extremely heavy iron content in our water that stains EVERYTHING.  As it is its a moot point.  My kids took the white sheets and built forts, and made ghosts out of them, and had a blast doing it.  *snicker*

  • That’s excellent.

  • You can also take plastic grocery bags, cut them into strips and crochet them as well.  They make great mats to put right in front of the door for those muddy days.  You can also take the netting sacks that you get onions in, strip them and crochet them into those netting scrubber things for dishes.
