  • What do you eat when you camp?

Or what did you eat when you were kids when you camped?

I made my menu for our vacation--which we're leaving on on the 20th.  But was wondering if anybody had some suggestions to spice it up.  We have available to us for cooking a Hibatchi, and a 2 burner Coleman stove, or a campfire if we need.

    TIA

  • Well, I can't let you go till you do some posting for Stephanie's stories.  chuckles...and Runes.

But, for whateve reasons canned stew always tasted better over a campfire.  Now one of the young girls at work knows how to bake over a campfire. I'll get some info for you on that.  Also, I made mac and cheese.  Used elbow macroni, boiled it, dumped the leftover water and added chucks of cheese to melt.  Also, if you add cream of chicken soup to the mix...nummy.

  • ryc...*snickers*  Pokes her muse gently.  So glad everyone is well again.  Have a lady at work who was sent to the hospital today with her two wee one and hubby because they keep getting Strep.  Doctor figures one of them is a carrier.  And, I've to this persons house and she is a 'neat freak'  sooooooo....no fun for them.

    *hugs*

  • when i was a little girl, our camping food was never very exciting - mostly hamburgers and hot dogs or grilled cheese sandwiches and beef stew - hmmm, sounds like the stuff we eat now! :P

  • Trail mix with lots of sweet and salty! Dried fruits and nuts give you lots of energy. Baked beans.

I can't remember what this dish is called but here's what you do: get a length of tin foil and some raw hamburger. You also need some raw, cut up veggies. We usually used potato, corn, carrots, peas, etc. Mix up hamburger w/ veggies and add a little salt or pepper. Make a round ball. Wrap it in tin foil and lay it in the coals of the fire (not the flames) until it smells so delicious that you burn your fingers trying to get it out and open so you can devour it. We used to fold a loop into the top of the tin foil so it could be retrieved from the fire by poking a stick through the loop and lifting it out.

For dessert: S'mores of course! Here's one dessert I loved: take dough (flour and water mixture will do, mix until dough is malleable but not sticky) and press around end of clean dowel rod. It should completely cover the end and go up the side of the rod several inches and be evenly applied. Bake over fire until it turns golden brown. When it is done it should slide easily off without leaving dough on the rod, and form a cup in your hand. Fill with pie fillings, my favorite was cherry pie filling, and I would drop a couple pieces of chocolate in too. Eat while hot! Another delicious dessert: Bananas! Do not peel banana. Slice it with a knife lengthwise, but don't extend the cut to the edges of the banana (you want to make a sort of pocket). Stick pieces of chocolate and mini marshallows into the pocket, all down the length of the banana. Wrap banana in tin foil and place in coals, see above for retrieval time and method.

    I miss camping.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention - when you get the banana out of the fire, you should still not peel it. The insides will be goey and drippy! Unwrap foil enough so you can access the slit in the banana with a spoon and scoop the delicious mixture directly into your mouth.

  • Things like chilli and pasta work well because you only need two pots, one for the sauce and one for the rice/pasta. Chicken supreme - chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce - works for the same reason. Chicken supreme in one pot. Rice or potatoes in the other.

Potatoes can be cooked in tin foil in a fire. Either bake them, or add a dab of butter.

Fruit can be done the same way with maybe a bit of sugar or orange juice to make syrup. Things like plums, nectarine, peaches etc work particularly well and don't take long.

  • I want to go camping too!

  • You gotta have hot dogs! Ehehehehe. If you had a dutch oven you could all sorts of really cool things like bake cobbler, cake, cook beans, etc.

  • My son tells me that you can make pizza on the campfire.  I've done pizza on the barbeque- bake the dough on both sides for a few minutes then top with sauce, pepperoni, and some semi-cooked vegies if you like and cheese.  Very tasty!
